Morganically Grown

Me:  Ladies and gentlemen, last night I had my first comment spam.

You:  Awwww!

Me:  I know, I know, this means my little baby’s all growed up. I didn’t even realize it was happening, and then — BAM! — she’s getting a taste of the real world. I’ve a design in the works (can’t really call it a redesign), so pretty soon she should be through her awkward phase, and on her way to pimples, dating, and eventually credit.

So stay tuned, ’cause there’s lots gonna happen this week. And after it happens, I promise to write more.

Today’s New York Times is running an article on the lake with the longest name of any place in the country: Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg. So long, even the welcome sign that the Chamber of Commerce put up is spelled wrong.

My first thought was: folks from home in Issaquah often jokingly refer to it as “the ‘Quah.” Do folks from this place refer to it as “the ‘Chaubunagungamaugg?”

At any rate, if you know me, you know that I won’t rest until I can pronounce the name like a native. For those of similar determination and lexicographical mediocrity, let me break it down into syllables for easier digestion:

Char-gogg-a-gogg-man-chaugg-a-gogg-chau-bun-a-gun-ga-maugg

Some time ago I came across a posting which outlined a Bash prompt containing the return value of the previous command, colored green if the command exited normally ($? == 0) and red if the command exited with an error ($? != 0).

I wish I could remember where I found it; unfortunately, after some extensive Googling I’ve been unable to locate my original source. At any rate, it was broken when I found it, so I had to fix it, and I finally figured out how yesterday.

I’ve made some alterations to WordPress to allow for postings in certain categories to be restricted to registered users. This will help me separate the personal from the professional posts on this site and allow me to target my audiences accordingly.

So please create an account if you’d like to be added to the list to view my personal entries. Otherwise you’ll just see a bunch of technobabble from now on.

After a hiatus of about two weeks, the site is finally back up. There will be more downtime in the coming weeks, as I’ll almost assuredly be upgrading to Yellow Dog 4 when it’s released, but for now I’ll be resuming development on this site.

Subsequent posts this week will address the status of my life at the moment. There’s plenty of news — some good, some really good, and some that would appear to be bad at first glance, but is in fact quite good. So stay tuned.
